I love my agent
I’m still waiting to hear good news from several editors, and since the holiday weekend is upon us, it looks like I’ll be waiting for a bit longer. Oh well. I find comfort and solace in the fact that I have the best agent. Jill is such a cheerleader for her clients. We call ourselves The Corkers and keep in touch frequently through email and Facebook. She’s always telling us how brilliant we are and how great our writing is. And since I’ve never met a secure writer, I can honestly tell you that her words are like a balm to my soul.
I know everyone says writing is a solitary life, but for me it’s the only time in my day when I feel truly connected, totally unalone. My characters are like old friends who know you better than your own family. I know everything about them, and yet they still suprise me, make me laugh and tug at my heart. Next to being with my children, it’s simply the best way I know how to spend my time.
Still, sharing my work with Jill has been amazing and affirming. To me, this process has been like a pregnancy. When I was pregnant with each of my daughters, I would talk to her and tell her stories and how much I loved her. Writing a novel is like being pregnant: exciting, nurturing and filled with anticipation and maternal love. Getting an agent is like having a sonogram when the doctor gets to see the baby on the screen with you and together you can see glimpses of the baby and the anticipation begins to mount as this all becomes so very real. I imagine acquiring an editor is like being in labor: excited that this is almost over, painful at times (revisions, revisions, revisions) but ultimately exhilarating until TA DA!! You’ve given birth to a book!
Back to waiting . . .
