Interview with children’s author Susan Meyers
Susan Meyers is a children’s writer and the author of Callie and the Stepmother. She’s had several works published in children’s anthologies; she also loves writing Haiku, and has a new book coming out this fall.
1) Why Do You Love Writing For Children? Maybe because it allows me legitimate access to their world. I’m still allowed to believe in fairies, and there’s always a chance that a frog is really a prince!
2) What were some of your favorite books when you were growing up? Nancy Drew, The Happy Hollisters, The Bobbsey Twins, Egdgar Allan Poe, and all the fairy tales.
3) What are you reading now? My Big Sister Is So Bossy She Says You Can’t Read This Book by Mary Hershey and A Penny for Your Thoughts by Mindy Starns Clark.
4) What new work(s) are coming out for you? My early chapter book The Princess and the Pee in November (yay!) from Blooming Tree Press and my short story “The Haunted House on the Hill” is coming out in Stories for Children in October.
5) What was your first experience with getting published? A small college anthology of poetry. My poem was called “Never Quite in Style.”
6) What’s the best advice you were given about writing? Don’t get discouraged. Go to conferences, join critique groups, learn your craft and keep writing. If you do, it will happen… that call that says, “I want your book!”
7) What’s your favorite quote? “A room without books is like a body without a soul” ~ Cicero
